49ers Coach Katie Sowers is Making History in Superbowl LIV

It’s that time of year again, folks! The Super Bowl is just around the corner. The San Francisco 49ers are facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs (and not a Patriot will be in sight on that fine day). So it’s time to break out your beers, cook up some nachos, and pop a squat on the couch. But this year we have something extra to celebrate.

The 49ers are bringing history in their wake, in addition to taking their shot at their sixth Super Bowl win. And that’s because their assistant coach Katie Sowers is making the history. Sowers is officially the first female and first openly gay coach to go to the Super Bowl with an NFL team.

This is a great step in the way of equality for women and the LGBTQ+ community. It’s proof that everyone has as much right to a position in predominantly male industries as anyone else. If you work hard and have a passion for what you do, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, or anything else shouldn’t matter. It doesn’t matter.

I may not be rooting for either of the teams in the Super Bowl, but I certainly will be rooting for Sowers as she hopefully helps lead her team to victory.
