A 51-year-old grandmother has given birth to her own granddaughter after offering to be her daughter’s surrogate. Julie Loving delivered a baby girl named Briar Juliette Lockwood in an Illinois hospital on November 2, with her daughter Breanna Lockwood next to her side. Breanna Lockwood and her husband, Aaron, are the baby’s biological parents.

The couple decided to consider surrogacy after attempts to conceive on their own through IVF for nearly two years and suffering miscarriages. Lockwood told Good Morning America, “Struggling with infertility was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. When you have a plan for your life and then something like infertility gets in the way, I felt like I couldn’t see what I pictured anymore, that it could be taken away from me.”

Lockwood’s mom offered to carry her grandchild due to the cost of a gestational carrier being so expensive, normally costing $60,000 or more. Loving told Good Morning America that she had two “easy” pregnancies with her two children and felt it would work out. Loving became pregnant after the couple’s first embryo transfer in March. Lockwood shared in an Instagram post, “My mom was an absolute rockstar through a difficult delivery. The sacrifices she took to bring this little slice of heaven into our world takes my breath away.”

Loving had Briar through a C-Section on November 2 due to a problem with the umbilical cord. Lockwood said, “It was definitely a surreal process. All the feelings came at once, just watching my mom go through everything and all she’s done for me and is continuing to do.”
