Summer blockbusters are all well and good for some, but there’s something special about the movies that roll into theaters when the air is getting crisp, everyone is drinking their pumpkin spice lattes, and there’s an ethereal quality in the atmosphere as the leaves begin to shift to reds and golds. Movie makers know just what they’re doing when they release an autumn film instead of any other time of year. So, here are seven highly anticipated movies hitting the cinemas this fall!

1. IT: Chapter 2

The Loser’s Club returns to Derry 27 years after the vicious Pennywise terrorized them one fateful summer of their childhood. They thought they destroyed him. They thought they could bury the trauma and move on with they’re lives. They were wrong. Pennywise is awake again, and he is obsessed with and craving the kids that got away.

Why is it anticipated?

Everyone just can’t seem to get enough of Stephen King and his inventive, but terrifying, brand of horror. IT isn’t just another horror movie with cheap jump scares and every horror trope in the book. It’s grounded in an authentic coming-of-age story about kids going through the hardships of growing up, making new friendships, and finding themselves…while they’re also being hunted by a murderous, shape-shifting clown.

Release Date: September 6th

2. The Goldfinch

For Theodore Decker, The Goldfinch painting that he stole the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a constant reminder of the mother that was taken from him at thirteen years old in a devastating terrorist attack. As the young boy grows into a man, he descends into a life of crime, and his only ray of hope for a better life lies in everything The Goldfinch represents.

Why is it anticipated?

The Goldfinch is based off a best-selling, critically acclaimed novel by Donna Tartt, and a good movie adaptation is always a draw for book nerds. Th anticipation alone of how it will stack up to the words on the page is enough to pull them in. Then there are those interested in the story who would rather just watch a film, and they will be lining up too.

Release Date: September 13th

3. Joker

For the first time ever on the big screen, a true origin story for one of the most legendary and iconic villains of all time. As a ‘gritty character study’, you’ll go on a journey with Arthur Fleck to discovery just what it feels like to be disregarded by the world around you and the tole that it takes on man’s psyche.

Why is it anticipated?

The Joker has been a fan favorite villain for countless years. Odds are even if you’re more of a Marvel fan than DC, your favorite villain is still the Joker. The Joker isn’t just a man or just a villain, but a concept of chaos that allows him to be one of the most versatile characters on screen. Also, let’s be honest, people need to wash the bad taste of Jared Leto’s Joker out of their mouths with something fresh.

Release Date: October 4th

4. Terminator: Dark Fate

Sarah Connor makes her return to the screen in this long-time-coming installment of the Terminator franchise. Sarah’s had a long life since Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but that won’t stop her from coming to the aid of those in need when new threat, T-1000, is sent from the future after his new target. She may even receive some help from another familiar face along the way.

Why is it anticipated?

The Terminator is an iconic franchise that lends to a lot of different ideas and concepts that it could probably go on forever, just like the Fast and the Furious movies. Robots and explosions are always in style. Add a badass leading lady and the nostalgia-filled reboot craze that’s sweeping the nation and you’ve got yourself a blockbuster.

Release Date: November 1st

5. Frozen 2

Elsa and Anna embark on a new adventure in this long-awaited sequel. Along with friends Kristoff, Olaf, and trusty elk, Sven, they set out to discover the truth of Elsa’s powers, which may be found in an ancient, autumn-locked forest in an enchanted land.

Why is it anticipated?

Do we even have to question why this is anticipated? The first Frozen movie EXPLODED on to the Disney scene because it was new, it was different, and it was progressive. Audiences have been waiting almost 10 years for this sequel, and Disney is keeping the plot tight under wraps until the release date gets closer because who doesn’t love a good mystery?

Release Date: November 22nd

6. Charlie’s Angels

New girls, same Charlie. Get ready for three more badass ladies taking up the mantel of Charlie’s Angels in this reboot of both the beloved 1970’s television show and 2000’s movie franchise.

Why is it anticipated?

Let me say it louder for the people in the back: we LOVE badass leading ladies. Give us explosions, give us kicking butt and taking names, give us Kristen Stewart rocking some short hair, and we’re all in. This movie has the same energy as all those gender-swapping reboots, but without the gender swapping and with the potential to actually be good (sorry Ghostbusters reboot).

Release Date: November 15th

7. Zombieland: Double Tap

Another long-awaited sequel the world thought may never see the light of day. Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock have been surviving the zombie apocalypse all this time as a little rag-tag family, but they’re returning to the big screen to show us the real meaning of “The Double Tap.”

Why is it anticipated?

Jesse Eisenberg. Woody Harrelson. Emma Stone. Abigail Breslin. Zombies and hilarity. Enough Said.

Release Date: October 18th
