A 24-year-old woman and her unborn baby was shot and killed while sitting in a parked car on the side of the road in the Wilmington neighborhood of Los Angeles. Authorities are requesting the public’s help in identifying the suspect.

Arlene Leonor Rodriguez was seven months pregnant. She parked in the 1100 block of North Neptune Avenue at around 11:25 a.m. on Sunday. An unidentified man was working on the car’s engine. A suspect walked up and shot multiple rounds into the vehicle, striking Rodriguez, and the man with her. The suspect fled and paramedics took Rodriguez and the male victim to a hospital. She was pronounced dead and her baby did not survive.

A small makeshift memorial was made at the scene of the crime featuring candles, a stuffed animal, and flowers. The male victim who was with Rodriguez at the scene suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was listed as stable.

Rodriguez became Los Angeles’ 294th murder victim of the year, with Los Angeles not exceeding 300 homicides in a year since 2009. On Monday, Arlene’s stepmother Jessica Rodriguez created a GoFundMe to help pay for the cost of a funeral. She posted on the site, “On Sunday November 15th we received the worst news a parent ever wants to hear. She was proceeded in death by her mom Anita in 2005 when she was only 9 yrs old. And then her brother Richard Rodriguez was tragically murdered in 2011 when she was age of 15. Losing her brother was mentally and emotionally hard for her to overcome.”

Police do not currently have a description of the suspect and has urged anyone with information about the shooting to call Detective Coffee or Detective Tiffin at (310)-726-7887 or (310)-726-7884. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at (800)-222-TIPS.
