In a memo released to CNN and Business Insider, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that employees of the corporate giant would have the option to work remotely through at least the end of June 2021. The decision came after schools across the nation had been pressured to make difficult decisions regarding returning students to on-campus or virtual classrooms, leaving many parents without an option but to remain with their students at home.

“To give employees the ability to plan ahead, we are extending our global voluntary work from home option through June 30, 2021 for roles that don't need to be in the office,” Pichai wrote, “I hope this will offer the flexibility you need to balance work with taking care of yourselves and your loved ones over the next 12 months.”

What does it mean? Some speculate that this decision will mark a big shift to virtual positions, particularly in tech companies. It's possible that other companies will follow suit and allow remote work at least temporarily, should the company have the resources to do so. Some may even allow remote work indefinitely, taking some of the strain off of finding expensive childcare if schools do not agree to head back to the classroom full-time.

Do you work remotely? Is it a temporary change, or will your company go totally online? What could happen to businesses that need to operate in-office? Leave your thoughts below!
