In a new announcement on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Instagram page, the couple communicated their intention to begin a move toward independence from the Royal Family, which includes a new "charitable entity" and a division of time between England and North America.

“We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they wrote on the page, “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”

The couple has been in the news before regarding difficult transitions, especially during and immediately following Meghan Markle's pregnancy. The couple hopes that splitting between the two continents may alleviate some of the difficulty and benefit their son, saying: “This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

No word yet on what the "charitable entity" may be, but the two promised that more information would be available to the public soon.
