Just days after an Internet storm slamming Forbes for their "America's Most Innovative Leaders" list, which paid tribute to 99 men and one woman, Hasbro announced the launch of a new edition of Monopoly. The board game, named Ms. Monopoly, focuses on investing in woman-made innovations as opposed to real estate. These investments include bulletproof vests, WiFi, chocolate chip cookies, and ride sharing.
The timing is insanely good. Just as it seemed that women's innovations were going unappreciated, Hasbro launches a game that celebrates these things. They also highlight the gender wage gap but reverse the statistic. In the game, when male players pass "Go," they collect the usual $200 while female players collect $240. The company called it a "fun new take on the game that creates a world where women have an advantage often enjoyed by men."
The announcement is getting both positive and negative feedback from the public. Hasbro has also released and received criticism for other Monopoly editions such as Monopoly Socialism and Monopoly for Millennials in the past. Ms. Monopoly is available for pre-order now and will be released in the next month.
