Supermodel Halima Aden, 23, has taken to social media to announce that she has decided to quit the fashion industry, citing its pressure to leave her religious beliefs behind. Aden was one of the first models to ever walk the runway for major clothing brands such as Max Mara, Tommy Hilfiger, and Stella McCartney.

"I can only blame myself for caring more about opportunity than what was actually at stake," she wrote. She's expressed in the past that while her wearing her hijab is written into her modeling contract, she has faced much trouble booking jobs that would accommodate her religious choices.

Aden felt extreme pressure as a Black woman in the industry who also wears a hijab. With the announcement, she has felt great relief, she said. "Wow this is actually the most RELIEF I felt since I started [modeling] in 2016," she wrote. "I’m taking a stand for myself but I’m also taking a stand for all the people who lost their soul to fashion," she said in a different post.

Aden has appeared on the cover of multiple major magazines including British Vogue, Vogue Arabia and Allure.
