I Believe I Can Fly

No, it’s not the time for an R. Kelly tribute. Nor is it time to float away back to the 90s, and have a sing-along party to Space Jam, ok, if you’re younger than 30 you might have to Google all this – life is tough iGeneration, but you’ll have your own Space Jam to reminisce on one day.

Damn ADHD, ok back to the point. The title does have some connections to the words of R. Kelly’s song, but it merely borrows the concept. You see, a lot of us have so much talent, so much potential, in fact, there are artistic prodigies out in this world that no one will ever know even breathed a breath. As good old Elton would say, “It's a sad, sad situation, and it's getting more and more absurd.”

So what’s the problem? Why aren’t these amazing individuals flying? Well, self-belief is such a major factor why most people fail because they lack 1, just 1; the person that believes they are able to fly (within the context of their talent, this isn’t Peter Pan). Like it or not, agree with me or not, be a badass lone wolf looking for trouble, the fact is, you, like me, crave affirmation, a well done, a pat on the back, and I believe in you, you’re going to fly someday.

Without that belief and support, dreams often die, we succumb to the status quo. Purpose becomes fairy-tale language, responsibility, obligation, duty, the language of mature adults, who seem joyless, empty shells with a paycheck. Awesome isn’t it, now you have money, but at what cost? The loss of belief in yourself and the abilities that make you unique, that makes you, you?

iGeneration look away now, I get enough hate mail, oh screw it, read on and LIVE! I'm proudly immature, irresponsible, a clown, I’ve shown the “system” that is supposed to determine my worth based on compliance the magic finger. Why? I believe I can fly. I don’t care how insane they say I am, nor do the "dream killers" faze me (although they use to make me feel worthless), no I have my sights set on a dream, I will fly, and once I do, I’m not planning on coming down again.

I beg you, fellow dreamers, create a new normal, to hell with the status quo, nothing significant was ever achieved by the guy working in admin who nobody can confidently identify by name. It’s the V's that change the world and leave a footprint. You’re special, you’re unique, and the fact that you’re reading this is no coincidence because maybe it’s the first time you're going to hear this, but I affirm you, I don’t know you, but I believe in you. You can fly, so do you want to?

Keep dreaming and you’ll fly,

Dwain Donovan Stewart
