In a move considered at the very least bold and assertive, President Trump's ordered drone strike on Baghdad International Airport has succeeded in killing Iranian General Qassim Suleimani. This strike certainly won't go unnoticed by the Iranian military.

President Trump made the order in response to the recent attack on the American embassy in Baghdad, as well as increased conflict with Tehran. The Pentagon stated that "General Suleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.” Trump has stated that going to war with Iran is not his goal:

"I don’t think that would be a good idea for Iran. It wouldn’t last very long. Do I want to? No. I want to have peace. I like peace," he told reporters in Palm Beach, FL.

Several experts, such as Robert Malley of the International Crisis Group, have expressed concern that Iran may retaliate with extreme force to avenge their irreplaceable leader. "From Iran’s perspective, it is hard to imagine a more deliberately provocative act,” he told the New York Times, "And it is hard to imagine that Iran will not retaliate in a highly aggressive manner.”

Measures are being taken to ensure the safety of American civilians and soldiers. According to Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper, preemptive action will be taken if there are hints of retaliation.
