J.K. Rowling returned from a brief hiatus on Twitter to announce to fans that she 'stands with' Maya Forstater, a former employee of the Centre of Global Development. Forstater, whose contract was not renewed after public comments regarding transgender people's inability to change their sex, and the unwillingness to use correct pronouns. Rowling tweeted:

"Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating that sex is real? #IStandWithMaya #ThisIsNotADrill”

Many were shocked at the author's support of Forstater, who lost her case against the CGC. Judge James Tayler ruled that her "absolutist" views on sex and insistence upon calling people "by the sex she considered appropriate even if it violates their dignity and/or creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment” did not invalidate her termination.

Since siding with Forstater, Rowling has been labeled a TERF (trans exclusive radical feminist), and many former fans have disavowed her as an LGBTQ ally.
