Love Yourself First on Valentine's Day

For the unpaired, Valentine's Day can be a really disheartening experience. Yeah, you could arrange a hangout with your friends, but maybe this year they've all planned dates. You could try out speed dating or a service, but maybe you don't have the money, or can't get the time off work. Maybe you even want to embrace Singles Awareness Day! Whatever your reason for being unattached, make sure your goal this year is to love yourself first.

But how? The whole world seems saturated in lovey-dovey displays on February 14th! Everything appears to be designed to remind single people of their loner status. My recommendation is to write yourself a love letter. If that sounds silly, you're not alone: I used to roll my eyes at the idea of serenading myself. It really is one of the simplest ways to remind yourself that you matter, with or without a partner. Write about some of the things you've done that you're proud of, or ambitions that you cherish. Recall kind deeds you've done, or times when you were happiest.

When you're done writing your letter, treat yourself to something you don't often get or do. This can be as big as a trip or expensive gift to yourself, and as small as a 6 piece of chicken nuggets and a $6 box of wine. Whatever you need most, just remember that you're worth loving, even if you're not in a relationship.
