Merriam - Webster deemed the word ' sexual preference ' to be ' offensive ' after its use by US Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett caused a controversy. Senator Mazie Hirono criticised Barrett for using the term ' sexual preference ' instead of ' sexual orientation ' and called it an " offensive and outdated term ". The 5th definition of word ' preference ' on dictionary's website now cites ' orientation '.
