Researchers have solved the mystery behind human feet washing ashore on beaches in the USA and Canada.

Since 2007, beachgoers have, at several instances, came across shoes and sneakers containing decaying feet on shores across the United States and Canada. This first instance came to light when in August 2007 a young girl on Jedediah Island, British Columbia, found a sneaker with a decaying foot washed ashore. And since then, many more have been discovered sparking speculations that there was either a sinister serial killer on the loose or it was the work of aliens who threw feet by the beach after mutilating humans.

But now, Cpl. Garry Cox of Oceanside RCMP on Vancouver Island has stated that researchers have concluded that the speculations have no truth. Rather the mystery behind the grim incidents is rather a work of nature.

‘We have been informed that it looks like both feet had separated from the body by natural decomposition, possibly while in the water.’ Cox told CBC.

Adding to Cox's statements coroner Barb McLintock also said “We pretty well think we know what happened in every case. There’s none that have any suggestion of homicide.. in every case, there is an alternate, very reasonable explanation. It really didn’t come up until we had running shoes that floated so well. Before, they just stayed down there at the bottom of the ocean.”

The feet themselves are often believed to have come from people who took their own lives or drowned as a result of an accident, with their bodies sinking to the bottom of the sea. As creatures feed on them, the feet then separate and float back to the surface, later washing ashore.

In total, between 2007 and 2019, 21 feet had been discovered by people walking on the beach.
