The American Music Awards happened last night, and while Taylor Swift may have won six awards, been crowned artist of the decade, and beat Michael Jackson's award record by reaching 29 AMA's total, I think Selena Gomez deserves to walk away feeling like a champion after her performance last night. 

The artist did not win any awards at the AMAs, but she did open the show with two of her newest singles "Lose You to Love Me" and "Look at Her Now." The feat isn't that she was the show opener, it's what she overcame to get back on that stage again.

Everyone knows about Selena Gomez's on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber, which left her with a lot of emotional scars, baggage, and mental health issues. Additionally, Selena has been suffering from the autoimmune disease Lupus for many years, and had a kidney transplant in 2017 due to the health issue. All of this together is a lot for any person to handle, especially considering the body image issues the disease brought on and dealing with obsessive fans when it came to the fallout from her last, and final, breakup with Bieber.

To overcome all of this, get back on stage, and show the world Selena Gomez 2.0 is an incredible accomplishment. Whether you enjoy her music or not, whether you think the performance was good or not, getting ones confidence back after being torn down by unfortunate circumstances for over two years is no small thing. She even had to go so far as to overcome all of that in the moment as well, as Gomez suffered from a panic attack right before taking the stage for her performance. 

Selena Gomez deserves a ton of recognition for getting back in the game, and I personally can't wait to see where she takes her career from here.
