Sex and the City is getting a reboot on HBO Max after years of rumors that the series would be returning in some capacity. Sarah Jessica Parker said they weren't going ahead with a movie in 2017 when there was talk about a third film in the works, but it looks like fans are now getting what they've wanted for years. According to Deadline, the show is going to have a limited run and Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbs) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte York) are returning, however Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones) will not be in the show.

Cattrall spoke to the Women’s Prize for Fiction podcast saying the original show, "was a lot of fun and I loved it and being in new territory is always exciting. I felt like we were.” And "Walking away, even if it’s the only thing to do, you always feel, it’s a bit of shame, I think. The taste of shame and you have to let go of that. You don’t want to become that caged bird (sic).”

There was a script written for a third film, but the movie was eventually cut from the roster. Sarah Jessica Parker said about the cancellation: We had this beautiful, funny, heartbreaking, joyful, very relatable script and story. It’s not just disappointing that we don’t get to tell the story and have that experience, but more so for that audience that has been so vocal in wanting another movie.”
