This year, the Library of Congress has inducted Shrek along with twenty-four other movies into the National Film Registry (NFR). Every year the NFR chooses twenty-five films to be preserved for cultural, aesthetic, or historical significance. In 2020 the films that were chosen date from 1913 - 2010. The NFR along with the National Film Preservation Board (NFPB) were established by the National Film Preservation Act of 1988 and consistently reauthorized by Congress in 1992, 1996, 2005, and 2008.

A film becomes eligible for preservation ten years after its initial release. the National Film Preservation Board started creating individual ballots of films to be voted on when in 1989, over 1,000 movies were submitted by the public for consideration. Since 1997, members of the public have been allowed to nominate up to 50 films a year to be considered by the NFPB. The NFR includes Hollywood classics to orphan film, a movie doesn't have to be feature-length to be inducted. The registry includes silent films, student films, newsreels, documentaries, home movies, music videos, along with a variety of other forms of media.

As of 2020 there are 800 films included in the NFR and Shrek is included due to the cultural impact it had. Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, said, "With the inclusion of diverse filmmakers, we are not trying to set records but rather to set the record straight by spotlighting the astonishing contributions women and people of color have made to American cinema, despite facing often-overwhelming hurdles." This year seven movies inducted were created by people of color and nine were directed by women. On Tuesday, December 15 at 8:00 P.M. ET, turner Classic Movies will air a special showcasing of the 2020 inducted movies.
