Spike Lee's Next Film Will Be Viagra Musical

Spike Lee will be writing and directing a musical with Kwame-Kwei-Armah about the creation of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. The screenplay will be based on the David Kushner Esquire article “All Rise.” In the article it’s explained that the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer discovered that the pill that was first developed for heart-related chest pain, actually ended up helping a different part of the body altogether, perking up sex lives all around the world.


Music will be written by the Tony-award songwriting team of Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald. The project will be the next Spike Lee Joint following his releases this year of Netflix’s Da 5 Bloods and HBO’s concert film David Byrne’s American Utopia. Deadline explains that the script is inspired by the "discovery and launch of the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, which was hatched as a treatment for heart-related chest pain only for researchers to find its game-changing qualities occurred below the belt."


Director Spike Lee is known for his films that deal with controversial subjects like racism and politics, this will be his first musical. The 63-year-old Brooklyn native said in a statement that he had grown up hating musicals. He stated, “Finally Going Into My 4th Decade As A Filmmaker I Will Be Directing A DANCIN’, ALL SINGIN’ MUSICAL.” The film is currently untitled.


Lee won his first Oscar in 2019 for the screenplay of BlacKkKlansman. Some of his classics include Do the Right Thing, Malcom X, and She’s Gotta Have It.
