Kevin “PPMD” Nanney, the Super Smash Bros. Melee pro, is quitting Evil Geniuses after seven years.

As announced by the player on Saturday, PPMD has decided to part ways with its first and only sponsor after being an asset to the team for several years. Notably, PPMD only confirmed the news after Evil Geniuses dedicated a tribute to him on January 15. The organization had, at that time, not confirmed the player’s departure, nor had it revealed his absence from its upcoming roster. It is unclear why PPMD is quitting Evil Geniuses, but probably that is because of a confidentiality agreement between both parties.

PPMD announced his exit in a video on his YouTube channel. In the video, he thanked the team and his colleagues for their unconditional support throughout his competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee career. PPMD also cited how Evil Geniuses was the first organization ever to recognize Smash as a core esports. In fact, the player says that the organization has played a pioneering role in legitimizing Melee within the broader esports scene.

When PPMD first joined Evil Geniuses in 2014, he racked up great victories for the team. In 2014, he finished no. 3 in the world's top 100 Super Smash Bros. Melee smashers list. And in 2015, he earned an iconic tournament victory at Apex.

PPMD, however, later stepped away from the competitive scene due to his health problems. After 2017, he remained absent from all key tournaments. But in 2019, he started streaming on Twitch, and later moved as commentary for key events like Genesis 7 and the LACS 3. Now it remains to be seen what the gamer-turned-content creator has next in store for his fans.
