South Boston's infamous gangster, James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger, was killed soon after arriving from a prison transfer this past Tuesday. He was doing time for his two life sentences and was being transferred in to West Virginia due to bad health issues. While I was reading the articles reporting the homicide, I was surprised to find out how many people were outraged that he did not get the death penalty.
While I do believe there are certain cases where it is addmittable, I don't think it would have been necessary to add on top of his sentencing. Bulger was just shy of 90, dealing with health issues on top of two life sentences. To me, this sounds like a death sentence in itself. His story, however grotesque, was a pretty remarkable one. Plus we got a an awesome movie with Johnny Depp playing him in it.
