PATERSON, N.J. (WPIX). — On Monday night, a pattern of mystery lights over Paterson, New Jersey, made quite a commotion, with inhabitants on the ground trying to make sense of the unidentified flying objects.

Louis Stevens, a resident who was on the ground capturing the sight, said he lost count of the "flying white circles" that transformed into numerous shapes.

"You see it on YouTube, and it's always somewhere out in the Nevada desert," Stevens explained. "The shock is more like, is this happening? I mean, are we really seeing what we think we're seeing?"

According to Stevens, the unexplained lights dazzling the skies over downtown Paterson for more than five minutes. The items came to a stop at neighboring Garret Mountain.

WPIX forwarded the video to the FAA for examination by an official who checked in with local air traffic controllers.

According to the FAA, "nothing was reported."

While speculations abound on the ground, one possible scenario involves drones, especially after a government assessment released over the summer admitting that intelligence experts cannot explain such sophisticated maneuvers in the air.

"At first, I was perplexed," Victor Chu, a drone specialist based in New York who watched the footage, said.

The Chu is the creator, director, and executive producer of Sky Tech One, a drone videography and photography firm that has produced several award-winning projects. The Chu believes the flying objects were part of a practice session for a drone light show that went wrong, based on his expertise.

"If you look at any light display, they're all synced up and controlled by a computer," he explained. "If you look at the footage, you'll see that they're maintaining a formation for the most part, even if it's a little... scrambled."

It's uncertain whether they were drones or something else. A request for comment was not returned by the city's Public Safety Department.

The FAA encourages members of the public who witness this type of activity to report it to the National UFO Reporting Center. Those who believe that the action is endangering them or their property are encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
