In 1981, Barbara Walters interviewed the iconic Hollywood starlet, Katharine Hepburn.

Hepburn, a four-time Oscar winner, was remembered for challenging gender characters in movie studios. She was very relaxed in pants and did not care when retrogressive 1930s executives regularly pressed her to don dresses.

They wanted her to appear more “feminine” onscreen. Walters, an extraordinary interviewer, touched on her famous penchant for fashion defiance in old Hollywood.

This is a classic piece of work, performed by Hepburn. She cracks me up in this interview. She should have won an Oscar for this interview. Check it out:

Hepburn: I have not lived as a woman. I have lived as a man…I’ve just done what I damn well wanted to and I made enough money to support myself. And I ain’t afraid of being alone.

Walters: Is that why also you wear pants?

Hepburn: No, I just wore pants because they’re comfortable.

Walters: Do you ever wear a skirt, by the way?

Hepburn: I have one.

Walters: You have one.

Hepburn: I’ll wear it to your funeral.
